Father defends son who killed teen nephew in drunk driving crash: 'Kids are kids'

A Rhode Island man was caught on camera seemingly downplaying his 20-year-old son's alleged drunk driving in an auto accident that killed the driver's 17-year-old nephew.

"They were being kids. Kids are kids," Stephen McCrave said of his son Brandon, who was behind the wheel when the teen, Michael Skirvin, was thrown from the Jeep Wrangler they were in on Monday.

According to WJAR-TV, police said Brandon McCrave lost control of the vehicle while speeding in an area with a 25-miles-per-hour speed limit. McCrave was reportedly driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI), and also driving with a suspended license because of a prior DUI conviction.

The Block Island Times reported that McCrave was charged with another count of driving under the influence, as well as driving under the influence with a death resulting, and driving to endanger death resulting. He is currently being held without bail, and he is due in court on Oct. 7.

"He didn't recall any of the incident at all when I spoke to him," the suspect's father told WLNE-TV. "I spoke to him at the scene when he was still at the scene. I'm sure someone is to blame for it but I don't believe it's my son."
