Feminist attorney warns GOP will pay ‘heavy price’ if they ignore Kavanaugh accuser: ‘This is a serious crime’

Speaking just moments after the Washington Post broke a bombshell interview with the woman who has accused Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexually assaulting her, an MSNBC contributor warned Republicans they would be risking the wrath of women voters if they try to ignore the accuser's story.

Sunday afternoon the Post reported that Christine Blasey Ford, 51, came forward to them with her claim about the alleged assault, including evidence she spoke about it back in 2012 in front of her husband and her therapist.

Asked by MSNBC host David Gura what she thought of the report, author and attorney Jill Filipovic described how it will play out politically.

"There's a number of statements. something that is very different here is what's being alleged," Gura said after recalling the Clarence Thomas Supreme Court hearings. "Then it was sexual harassment. This woman is telling that newspaper this was a rape attempt. "

"This is a very serious crime," Filipovic agreed. "It's also not 1991. The Anita Hill accusations really shifted our perceptions of sexual harassment and bad male behavior in the workplace. These accusations, which are even more serious, are coming at a time when there's a really rousing public conversation about not just workplace harassment but sexual assault, sexual violence and the need for women to speak out against men who abuse their positions of power. "

"This is coming in the midst of the #metoo movement," she added. "I have a hard time seeing how the Republicans put the lid on this and not pay a serious price in the future."
