Florida Republican warns hoodie-wearing black rival might be a terrorist for meeting a tour guide

In another proud installment of a GOP campaign playbook built on racism, Islamophobia, and the assumption that Americans aren't very smart, a Tallahassee Republican is accusing his Democratic opponent of making America less safe—by not only once having worn a hoodie, but also meeting with a tour guide.

The mailer sent out by the campaign of state Rep. Frank Artiles features a photo of State Sen. Dwight Bullard wearing a hoodie. The image appears to come from a protest over the killing of Trayvon Martin, reportsMiami New Times. The text, meanwhile, accuses him of meeting with a terrorist group—a charge so flimsy it'd be laughable if it weren't so cynical a ploy.

"When Dwight Bullard met with a terrorist organization ... he made us all less safe," the ad warns.

The Miami Times dug into the basis for the claim. Apparently, Bullard went to Israel with Black Lives Matter activists. One of the guides in his tour had allegedly once been a member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.

"You're talking about literally two hours we spent with this guide during a nine-day trip," Bullard told New Times. "He was apparently involved in that organization ten years before I was born, went to jail for 17 years, got out, and is now licensed as a tour guide by the Israeli government."
