Former Mueller assistant explains why Flynn's sentencing fiasco was a disaster for Trump and destroyed his alibis

Michael Zeldin, a CNN legal analyst and former assistant to Robert Mueller, said Tuesday that after Judge Emmet Sullivan all but accused President Trump's former national security advisor Mike Flynn of treason, the president's claim that the Mueller probe is a 'witch hunt' was in tatters.

Anticipating that Sullivan would sentence Flynn to at least some prison time, Zeldin said only continued cooperation would save the disgraced general's skin.

"Remember Mueller always said that Flynn is continuing to cooperate," Zeldin said, adding that the judge was interested to see how Flynn's cooperation would impact case involving his dealing with Turkey. "Flynn, I think, has other opportunities to show the judge that his lies and his misconduct were such that he still can get probation because of his cooperation."

"I think Flynn's lawyers felt, and they took time out, that Flynn was going to get jail," he continued. "The big headline here is the judge finds this behavior treasonous. Not just Flynn, but all the people that Flynn coordinated with in creating these lies."

"It's a bad day for the narrative that this is a witch hunt and there is nothing serious there," Zeldin said, noting that the statement of offense shows Flynn "talking to hosts of other people" as he came up with the lie he told the FBI.
