Former Republican operative: 'Senate GOP looks like Handmaid's Tale' ahead of Kavanaugh testimony

On Tuesday, Senate Republicans announced that they had tapped a female sex-crimes prosecutor to question Christine Blasey Ford, one of three women accusing Brett Kavanaugh of sexual assault.

As more explosive allegations emerged against Supreme Court nominee Wednesday, political commenters wondered about the GOP's strategy in having Rachel Mitchell asks Ford questions.

On MSNBC Wednesday, Nicolle Wallace said it depressed her that Senators had to get outside help due to their "gender inadequacy."

"It's a really bad look that they can't do their jobs," she said.

"It's political disaster starting with 83-year-old Chuck Grassley," said former Republican strategist Steve Schmidt.

"It looks like the cast from the 'Handmaid's Tale' ... like the commanders' meeting," he continued.

"You have octogenarians, all white, all male. It does not look like the country," he said. Schmidt observed that the Senators are trying to avoid a proliferation of ads showing them berating a sexual assault survivor.

"They're going to avoid that ... but the optics of this are just profoundly bad," he said.

Earlier in the program Schmidt predicted the GOP would get killed in the midterms. "I think for Republicans heading into the midterm, it's nothing but bad options. It's literally death by shark or tiger or cobra. Those are the three political options here," he wryly observed.
