Fox's Shep Smith calls out Trump for trying to 'rewrite history' of his Charlottesville response

Fox News host Shepard Smith on Wednesday pointed out that President Donald Trump had attempted to defend his controversial response to Charlottesville by omitting his most controversial remark.

Speaking at a rally in Phoenix on Tuesday, Trump complained that the media had criticized his response to a white supremacist rally in Virginia that left one counter-protester dead.

"Here's what I said Saturday, 'we're closely following the terrible events unfolding in Charlottesville, Virginia,' this is me speaking, 'we condemn in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence.' That's me speaking Saturday," the president said at the rally.

But Smith noted that Trump had omitted the phrase "on both sides" -- which is what ignited a backlash.

"That last part of the quote, on both sides, said not once but twice, drew criticism from Americans of all stripes," the Fox News host explained.

"Now, leaving out on both sides -- I mean, that was the controversy," he asked Fox News reporter John Roberts. "There's not both sides to Nazis and racism. What is he attempting to do, rewrite history?"

Roberts confirmed that Trump "did appear to engage in some selective editing."
