'Fractured' Republicans are 'increasingly untethered from reality': analysis

Only four days after Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-California) was ousted as House speaker, a new foreign crisis emerged: the Israel/Hamas War. According to the Wall Street Journal, the death toll from the conflict had reached 1200 by Wednesday morning, October 11.

The U.S. House of Representatives is still without a speaker, but Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) and Rep. Steve Scalise (R-Louisiana) are competing for the position.

In a biting article published by The Bulwark on October 11, journalist A.B. Stoddard stresses that "fractured" House Republicans are in a state of chaos during a new foreign crisis.

"The Republicans who control the House of Representatives cannot respond to a new war waged against Israel," Stoddard explains. "They have rejected new aid to support Ukraine in its defense against the Russian invasion. They have no plan to keep the government from shutting down on November 17 when funding next runs dry…. Republicans are increasingly untethered from reality."

Meanwhile, in the U.S. Senate, Stoddard adds, Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Alabama) has caused a "blockade of more than 300 military promotions." And the 2024 GOP presidential primary, she laments, only makes things worse from a foreign policy standpoint.

"The Republicans running against Trump aren't actually trying to stop him, and congressional Republicans are not trying to govern," Stoddard warns. "For eight years, Trump has demanded Republicans defend his every lie, every violated norm, every crime. And now, battered Republicans are incapable or unwilling to carry out their responsibilities and respond to national security threats."

Stoddard continues, "They cannot be counted on to serve their constituents or their country, or to come to the aid of allies in desperate need of American leadership. Trump and tribalism have incapacitated them."
