Georgia 'Confederate themed' bar serves 'Ni**erita' shot with tequila and watermelon liqueur

A bar in the home town of the University of Georgia is generating controversy by featuring a racist drink -- a shooter called a "Ni**erita," which features tequila and watermelon-flavored liqueur.

Athens, GA's alt-weekly magazine the Flagpole reported Tuesday about the offensive drink which is served at the bar General Beauregard’s.

The racist joke came to light when a General Beauregard's employee brought the bartenders' recipe sheet to a print shop for copying. A print shop employee, disgusted by what he read, posted a photo of the drink cheat sheet online, then deleted it. However, by then the image had begun to spread on social media.

The bars' owners issued a statement on Tuesday morning insisting that they would never do such a thing:

"We had absolutely no knowledge of, and would never condone, this image that is claimed to be our drink menu. However, to be absolutely clear, we do not provide our customers with a drink menu with the exception of limited specials offered on chalk boards displayed openly by the front door and behind the bar. The circled drink included in the picture is not something we have ever served to customers or advertised and would never be approved by ownership. We are investigating the origin of this photograph and will take appropriate action to resolve this matter as needed.

However, screen captures obtained by Flagpole show a bartender from Beauregard's named Jake Gower confirming that the bar serves the shot and asking irate Facebook commenters "YOU PC, BRO?" via a meme featuring characters from the cartoon series South Park.

"It's just a shot, not a cocktail," wrote Gower.

"That doesn't make it any less racist," replied commenter Laura Conroy.

General Beauregard's is a "Confederate-themed" bar and only recently were persuaded to not fly a Confederate flag in their front windows.
