Geraldo: My Senate candidacy would bring 'new vitalization' to GOP

Fox News's mustachioed menace may be taking his show on the road to Washington, D.C. -- that is, if the voters of New Jersey will have him.

Appearing Friday morning at his regular perch on "Fox & Friends," the longtime conservative talk host followed up on the surprise announcement he made on his radio show Thursday, saying that if he decides to run for the Senate, he would aim to bring about a "new vitalization" in the Republican Party.

“I really do believe, as a modern Republican, that there is a point of view that is unrepresented in states like New Jersey,” he insisted. “There can be a new vitalization of the Republican Party – a concept where we extol the virtues of good business and fiscal policy, and we fight the deficit, and we don’t advocate the printing of money in obscene amounts just to cover the debt."

After assuring co-hosts that he "very well may" run for Sen. Frank Lautenberg's (D-NJ) seat, which Newark, New Jersey Mayor Cory Booker (D) also has his eyes on, Geraldo revealed what may be key to his platform.

"I believe in immigration reform," he said. "I believe in gay rights and gay marriage. I believe in choice -- not obscenely, but I believe in Roe v. Wade. So, you have to take my fiscal positions on being a Republican who believes that we have to bail out future generations rather than indebt future generations with these social policies that aren't in sync with much of traditional GOP policies, at least in recent years."

Could he actually win? It's anybody's guess, but Geraldo the U.S. Senator wouldn't be entirely without precedent: after all, a movie star and corporate spokesperson once became President of the United States, and the current Senator from Minnesota used to be a comedian on "Saturday Night Live."
