Golden Toads invade Chase Bank to protest fossil fuel investments

Reverend Billy Talen of the Church of Stop Shopping and a small group of singing Golden Toads briefly invaded a Chase Bank in Brooklyn on Saturday.

The reverend, clad in his typical white suit and wielding a megaphone, entered the bank along with a coterie of activists donning Golden Toad hats. The group sang about the extinction of the rainforest-dwelling amphibian, claiming the bank's "fossil fuel investments took the living rainfall from our lives."

The odd spectacle was intended to highlight JPMorgan Chase's investment in the coal industry.

An environmentalist report (PDF) released in 2012 labeled Bank of America, Citigroup and JPMorgan Chase as the top three financiers of the "worst of the worst" coal companies.

The report stated that "JPMorgan finances more utility companies on our 'risk' list than any other bank, and is additionally the leading underwriter of the global coal industry." The bank also finances mountaintop removal mining companies, an investment the church finds particularly egregious.
