'That’s none of your damn business': Ted Cruz snaps over question about Pride month
June 13, 2024
At the halfway point of Pride Month, an assortment of Republican lawmakers were asked by a reporter how they were personally celebrating it, but a follow-up question to Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) seemed to get under his skin.
According to a report from Pablo Manríquez writing for the New Republic, the majority of conversations with Republicans who were questioned resulted in various levels of awkward responses with Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) bringing up the ongoing war in Gaza and Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) seemingly confused by the question.
As the New Republic is reporting, "The New Republic asked 14 GOP senators this week about LGBTQ Pride Month. None had any plans to celebrate the movement for equality that began in New York City with the Stonewall uprising of 1969 and has become, over the decades, an audacious global street carnival honoring queer liberation in major cities around the world."
Of note, though, was Cruz's response which started off with a quip and ended with the Texas Republican cutting the conversation short.

According to Manríquez, Cruz initially responded that "'I’m proud of every American," when asked about Pride Month.
But when asked if he or his family celebrated Pride Month, Cruz shot back, "That’s none of your damn business."
Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) was even more dismissive when asked if Pride is big in his home state, replying, "Not to me, it isn’t."
The report added, "Log Cabin Republicans, a group representing LGBT conservatives and straight allies, wouldn’t say if any congressional Republicans celebrate Pride this year. None of the Republicans interviewed for this article had any plans to celebrate Pride."
