GOP candidate questions Dem opponent's Native American heritage because she wasn't 'raised on a reservation'

Janice Arnold-Jones, the Republican nominee to represent New Mexico's first congressional district, tried to cast doubt on her Democratic opponent's Native American heritage on Thursday during an interview on Fox News.

During the interview, host Ainsley Earhardt pointed out that Arnold-Jones' opponent, Democrat Deb Haaland, would become the first Native American woman in Congress if elected this fall.

"That's what they say, yes," replied Arnold-Jones.

"That's what they say?" asked a puzzled Earhardt. "What do you mean by that?"

"Well, I'm saying there's no doubt that her lineage is Laguna, but she is a military brat just like I am," she said. "I think it evokes images that she was raised on a reservation -- she belongs to a Pueblo."

Arnold-Jones went on to call the Laguna Pueblo a "wonderful lineage," but she said it made Haaland's stance on immigration difficult to understand.

"That confuses me because, here she's advocating for open borders and the people most vulnerable are our sovereign tribes and Pueblos where there is little law enforcement," she said.
