GOP lawmaker: The theater should be a 'safe space' for people like Pence and Trump

After Vice President-Elect Mike Pence made an outing to Broadway on Friday night to see "Hamilton" and was booed by the audience and then lectured by the cast, conservatives are seeking a safe space.

Many conservatives who have waged a war on political correctness and have often poked fun at the language and purpose of "safe spaces" have now called for spaces to be safe for them.

During a Monday night segment of CNN's Situation Room, anchor Wolf Blitzer, who was joined by Wisconsin Rep. Sean Duffy, questioned President-Elect Donald Trump's decision to respond to the matter in a series of tweets.

Specifically, Trump called on the cast to apologize to Pence, writing, "Our wonderful future V.P. Mike Pence was harassed last night at the theater by the cast of Hamilton, cameras blazing.This should not happen!"

He also wrote, "The Theater must always be a safe and special place.The cast of Hamilton was very rude last night to a very good man, Mike Pence. Apologize!"

And in a final tweet that was since deleted, the President-Elect said, "Very rude and insulting of Hamilton cast member to treat our great future V.P. Mike Pence to a theatre lecture.Couldn't even memorize lines!"

Blitzer asked whether Trump spends too much time "responding to his critics directly," asking "Do you think that's appropriate?" Duffy said he would be more concerned if he didn't know how hard Trump was working to "build a team that make America great again."

He added, "I think with the 'Hamilton,' crew, I think he was personally offended by that. The cast said, 'You know what, we're a diverse America,' but the cast was not a diverse America in political thought."

"They all shared the same political viewpoint," Duffy continued. "If you don't share their viewpoint, they attack you and demonize you. I think liberals and conservatives have to be far more accepting of people who don't agree with their perspective on the world."

Speaking from his own experiences with conflicting viewpoints, Duffy said, "My mother is a Bernie Sanders supporter. She loves Bernie and I love her."

But for Duffy, the most important matter again involved the theatre being a safe space for all people. He said, "You should be able to go to the theater and have it be a safe space and not have one guy with a microphone stop you and start telling you his political view."
