Republicans attack swing-district Democrats for failing to overturn a policy the GOP implemented

The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) is attacking several swing-district Democrats for failing to overturn a policy Republicans implemented back in 2017.

In a tweet posted on Wednesday afternoon, the NRCC claimed that Reps. Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ), Tom Malinowski (D-NJ), Mikie Sherrill (D-NJ) and Andy Kim (D-NJ) "failed at restoring the SALT deduction," referring to a federal tax deduction for state and local taxes that was primarily beneficial to people who live in Democratic-voting states that have higher taxes.

"They can't accomplish anything for hardworking New Jerseyans," the NRCC added.

The problem with this line of attack, however, is that it was Republicans who put a cap on the SALT deduction as part of their 2017 tax cut package. In fact, former President Donald Trump openly gloated about the fact that implementing the SALT cap hurt his former home state of New York, where some residents wound up paying more in taxes due to the policy.

As NBC News reporter Sahil Kapur notes, it's unusual for the House Republican campaign arm to slam Democrats for "not (yet) repealing a part of the Trump/GOP tax law."
