The Republican Steering Committee unanimously voted on Monday to strip embattled Rep. Steve King (R-IA) of all committee assignments, MSNBC reports.
A statement announcing the vote was released by Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), the GOP leader in the House.
King has found himself under increasing fire for his racist comments.
"Leader McCarthy’s decision to remove me from committees is a political decision that ignores the truth," King said in a statement. "Ultimately, I told him, ‘You have to do what you have to do and I will do what I have to do.’”
