'We got one!': Michael Steele busts up laughing at Mitch McConnell claiming GOP has 'hope' with black voters

The Republican Party has had trouble attracting black voters, but in audio published by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) did point to one bright spot in the form of Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC).

"Tim Scott is a member of our conference, and he's arguable the most popular politician in South Carolina," McConnell said. "So there's hope with African American voters as well."

Former GOP chairman Michael Steele busted up laughing about the audio while chatting with MSNBC's Brian Williams.

"Yeah, I know some blacks, too," he said. "One of them happens to be a U.S. Senator—he's in our caucus!"

Steele said that as the leader of the GOP he had many similar conversations with old white men who didn't get it.

"We got one! And we have meetings with him!" he said. "I'm sorry—it just reminds me of so many conversations I had when leading this party... trying to move this party and turn this elephant to understand that that's just not how it works."
