Gov. Nikki Haley: No Colbert for Senate because he slapped a baby with a puppy

Republican Gov. Nikki Haley of South Carolina on Wednesday again rebuffed Stephen Colbert's calls to be appointed the state's next senator, publishing a report that notes he once used a puppy to slap a baby.

"Mr. Colbert, clearly a whole lot of people felt you needed a second look for U.S. Senate, and because I believe in doing my full due diligence ... this is what our vetting process came back with," the governor wrote on her Facebook page, adding a link to opposition research on the satirist. "What say you?"

The facetious report notes that Colbert once planned to "stumble around Columbia, the capital, like pantless with a bottle of Jack Daniels and try to get arrested," and joked about using a puppy to slap a baby in hopes of being named the "Worst Person in the World" by liberal pundit Keith Olbermann.

Colbert has nominated himself to fill the seat of retiring South Carolina Sen. Jim DeMint (R). On his show, Colbert instructed his fans to show their support for his appointment to the U.S. Senate by pestering Haley on Twitter.

"When I look at the U.S. Senate, I say to myself, you know what they could use?" Colbert said. "Another white guy."

Though a recent poll found Colbert had more support than any other potential appointee, Haley jokingly said that the late-night comedian made a "big mistake" during an interview earlier this year when he forgot that South Carolina's state drink is milk.
