Former Trump administration White House deputy press secretary Sarah Matthews shredded President Donald Trump over his escalating demands for the United States to acquire Greenland from Denmark, something both Danes and Greenlanders have repeatedly said they have no interest in.
Trump raised new alarms on Monday with the exposure of an angry letter to Norway, threatening to take over Greenland because he wasn't given a Nobel Peace Prize, another one of his fixations. The news prompted a wave of calls for Trump to be removed from office through the 25th Amendment.
"I don't say thislightly: I think this might bethe most mentally ill, derangedthing that Donald Trump hasdone to date, to be threateningour allies and wanting to go towar, potentially, over Greenland, when his reasoning doesn't evenmake sense," said Matthews, a frequent critic of the president. He says we needGreenland because Russia andChina will take over Greenlandif we don't. But then heinvites Vladimir Putin to siton his Board of Peace. Make itmake sense for me, because itdoesn't make any sense."
Furthermore, she concurred with "The Weeknight" host and former GOP chair Michael Steele, "there'splenty of other solutions wecould do with the Danishgovernment if we wanted moreminerals, for example. ButTrump is not doing that. He'salienating our allies."
"And Ithink the voters who voted forhim are really frustratedbecause people did not vote forhim to take over Greenland," she added. "They voted for him because theywanted more affordable healthcare. They wanted lower costsof groceries at the grocery store. They want to be able tobuy a home. And these are notthe things he's prioritizing.Instead, he's prioritizing thisover his own vanity."
"And so Ithink that people need toforcefully push back and callupon their members of Congressto be out there and tellingthem that they need to pushback on Trump because theydon't want to see us go to warover Greenland, because that isnot what he was voted intooffice for," she concluded. "And the onlyRepublican I've really seenshow most spine on this isCongressman Don Bacon ofNebraska."
