A public comment session grew heated during a Missourri city council meeting when the mayor of the city of Liberty got into an argument with a citizen over a Confederate flag grave marker in a local cemetery, KMBC reported.
Activist groups started calling for the marker's removal in 2021, but the Sons of Confederate Veterans say it's not a monument but a grave marker for Confederate soldiers that shouldn't be disturbed.
The years-long dispute spilled over to the Liberty city council meeting on Monday when resident Dwayne Holtzclaw got into an argument with Mayor Greg Canuteson.
During his remarks, Holtzclaw said "there's nothing lower than attacking the grave of a military combat veteran," adding that "a coward does this," KMBC reported.
Canuteson interrupted, saying that no one is "attacking the grave of an American veteran," to which Holtzclaw replied that he filed a lawsuit "that proves that you did."
"I don't need to listen to you anymore," Canuteson fired back. "You have made your point and you are marring this meeting."
"You're a coward, sir!" Holtzclaw said before walking away.
