Former Trump administration communications official Alyssa Farah Griffin warned on Wednesday that Republicans are creating a trap for themselves by refusing to work with President Joe Biden on border issues.
This comes as Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has blamed Donald Trump himself for the party's apparent rejection of an in the works bipartisan Senate deal that would pair together aid to Ukraine with border security reforms, and as many Republicans have outright argued the issue should be blockaded until they can get President Joe Biden removed from office — a sentiment expressed on X by Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL).
"A 'deal' will allow Biden to pretend he’s doing something about the border but it won’t solve the problem," posted Rubio, who is well known for having worked on a bipartisan immigration deal himself in 2013 until pressure from the right flank made him tear it up. "If he won’t even enforce our existing law he is NOT going to enforce even tougher ones."

This comment sat poorly with Griffin, who scolded Rubio for putting politics over solving an issue his party says they care about.
"Republicans undermine our own message that there’s a crisis at the border when they won’t take an incremental win (with significant additional $ for border enforcement) because we’d rather deny Biden a 'win' & let the crisis get worse so we can campaign on eventually fixing it," Griffin wrote.
"Continued aid to Ukraine is in serious jeopardy at critical moment heading into the Spring offensive, when Ukraine is dangerously low on munitions," she added. "If God forbid this war is still going on next year, Trump will not support Ukraine & his R supporters are hedging now."
