Hackers take over Burger King's Twitter account, announce 'sale' to McDonald's
February 18, 2013
Hackers claiming to be affiliated with Anonymous took advantage of the President's Day holiday on Monday to turn Burger King's Twitter account into what TechCrunch called "a Whopper of a mess."
"We just got sold to McDonalds!" the Twitter feed -- re-branded with a McDonald's logo -- announced at around 12 P.M. ET on Monday.
"BURGER KINGĀ® USA official Twitter account. Just got sold to McDonalds because the whopper flopped =[ FREDOM IS FAILURE?" the account bio said.
Subsequent tweets mentioned hacking groups like "LulzSec" and the Anonymous Twitter account @YourAnonNews. A link to a deleted press released on Burger King's official website suggested that the group hacked more than just the Twitter time line in what they called the "#OPMadCow" operation.
Burger King did not respond to a request for comment by the time of publication.
