There has been a wave of arrests of people illegally carrying guns on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. with dozens of people charged so far this year, CBS News reported.
Many of the people arrested claimed they mistakenly or unknowingly had guns in their bags while going through Capitol checkpoints. One arrest included an Iowa man who had a loaded gun in a bag attached to a baby stroller in May, CBS reported.
On Monday, a 43-year-old Texas man was stopped for carrying a semiautomatic handgun, which he said he didn't know was in his bag. He was charged with possession of an unregistered firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition and possession of a high-capacity feeding device.
"People are not allowed to bring any weapons here. Even if you have a gun that is legally registered in another state, or the District of Columbia, it is still illegal to bring it on Capitol Grounds. The goal is to keep everyone around the entire campus safe," a Capitol Police spokesperson said.
A CBS News review found that Capitol Police made "19 firearms arrests so far in 2023, nearly matching the 25 they made in all of 2022. Since the Capitol complex reopened after the pandemic, which shuttered the Capitol complex in 2021 and 2022, it has hosted a fuller regimen of the protests, rallies and press events that were less frequent during the peak of the COVID outbreak."
