Organization pledges to haunt ex-Trump staffers so they can't get corporate jobs
Former White House staffers who were responsible for some of the most criticized policies are being held accountable as they move on from Donald Trump to their next jobs.
Speaking to MSNBC on Sunday, Austin Evers, Executive Director of American Oversight, explained that they're not advocating "canceling" Trump staffers, just ensuring that their full resume is understood by whatever company they intend to work for. Most Fortune 500 corporations want to stay away from controversy and racism, so many Trump policies could haunt their architects.
In the case of the child separation policy, investigations revealed that taking children away, putting them in the camps and then losing them, was all part of Trump officials' plan.
"We need to take away children," said former Attorney General Jeff Sessions, the New York Times reported. According to short-hand notes, Sessions said, "If care about kids, don't bring them in. Won't give amnesty to people with kids."
"Though Mr. Sessions sought to distance himself from the policy, allowing Mr. Trump and Homeland Security Department officials to largely be blamed, he and other top law enforcement officials understood that 'zero tolerance' meant that migrant families would be separated and wanted that to happen because they believed it would deter future illegal immigration," the Times cited Michael E. Horowitz, the Justice Department inspector general.
As the Children's Defense Fund explained in an editorial, the cruelty was the point.
The list that American Oversight has crafted targets the policy where the children were kidnapped.
"I think Stephen Miller jumps out because he has become synonymous with the cruelty of the administration," said Evers on MSNBC. "He didn't do it alone. There are people across the federal government that woke up every morning to make sure that Stephen Miller's program was implemented. So, this campaign was about using facts and evidence to give corporate America across America the tools they need to go to the doorsteps of our companies."
"We think the last four years really relied heavily on the president's failure to feel any kind of shame," he also said. "We don't think most of corporate America has that approach. So, we think highlighting the facts and evidence, making sure that companies and their employees have the facts about what someone did when they held the public trust will be a major step forward in accountability. That hiring moment is an accountability moment. And if these people didn't stand up for the values of democracy when they were in government, companies should ask whether they will do the same when joining their ranks."
