Friday night on "All In with Chris Hayes," host Chris Hayes tried to demystify what the Affordable Care Act does and does not do and make it so simple that even a "dummy" or someone who works at "Fox and Friends" can understand it. In this instance, the hosts of "Fox and Friends," he said, aren't actually being disingenuous. They just don't have any idea what they're talking about.
On Thursday night's show, Hayes got into a heated back and forth with North Carolina Rep. Renee Ellmers (R), who said that people who have health care will lose it under Obamacare and that people who don't have health care still won't be able to afford it.
The congresswoman, said Hayes, "seemed unclear about what would happen to those who can't afford health insurance and those already covered. The basic tenets of the law are that millions without insurance will now qualify for Medicaid or be able to purchase individual plans in newly created markets called exchanges, often with subsidies from the government."
"For the overwhelming majority with employer-provided coverage, things will stay the same," he said. "Four days from the rollout of those exchanges, millions have no idea what it means." Aside from a lot of "fear mongering," he said, there's very little accurate information currently in play about what Obamacare does.
Hayes then rolled a clip from Thursday morning's "Fox and Friends," in which host Steve Doocy took a small section of a Washington Post article about Obamacare and willfully misinterpreted it, saying that no one will be able to register their small business in the health exchanges until January. January, however, is when the new laws go into effect. Registration takes place in November. People get their insurance coverage beginning in January.
Doocy and his cohort are also confused about the actual amount of change that will take place for people who have coverage. He claimed that Obamacare will "blow up" the insurance industry for the sake of covering the 15 percent of the country who aren't insured.
Hayes said that he doesn't think Doocy is lying, but rather that he just fundamentally doesn't understand the tenets of the law.
"Obamacare doesn't 'blow up the system,'" he mocked, but rather delivers millions of new customers to private insurance companies with the government's help.
