Six dead after hazmat crisis at meat packing plant outside Atlanta: report

Multiple individuals were killed after a hazmat crisis at a factory in Gainesville, Georgia on Thursday.

"A liquid nitrogen leak at a northeast Georgia poultry plant killed six people Thursday, with multiple others taken to the hospital, officials said. Beth Downs, a spokesperson for Northeast Georgia Health System, said five people died at the Gainesville plant before they could be taken to the hospital, while one person died in the emergency room," The Washington Post reports.

A press conference by Hall County Fire Department Division Chief Zach Brackett was broadcast by 11 Alive News.

"Once the units arrived they found a large contingent of employees that have evacuated along with multiple victims that were in that crowd experiencing medical emergencies," Brackett said, noting that at least 10 people were transported to the hospital.

"The product in question that was involved in this incident has been confirmed to be liquid nitrogen, no explosion has occurred," he said.
