Stephen Colbert on Wednesday slammed Donald Trump Jr.’s assertion that he “can’t help” what people email him, joking that’s why the president’s eldest son has an apartment full of Nigerian princes and boner pills.
“Pretty much everybody agrees Trump Jr. was dumb to tweet this stuff, and the smart thing to do would just be to shut up.” Colbert said, referring to Trump Jr.’s emails regarding a meeting with a Russian emissary. “So, last night he went on Fox News and explained why he’s not responsible for any of this.”
Playing a clip of Trump Jr.’s interview with Sean Hannity, where the president’s eldest son claimed he “can’t help” what people email him, Colbert argued, “yes, he can’t.”
“That’s why his apartment is full of Nigerian princes and boner pills,” Colbert joked. “You’re gonna wanna keep those apart.”
Noting Trump Jr.’s excuse that the meeting occurred before “Russiamania” took over, Colbert said, “He colluded with the Russians before people were talking about Russian collusion, okay?”
“That’s like saying, ‘Yeah I fired a gun at that guy, but that was before everyone was talking about this whole murder trial,’” The “Late Show Host” pointed out.
Turning to Trump Jr.’s final excuse—that nothing came of the meeting—Colbert quipped, “Yeah it was all in his Yelp review: One star—did not deliver treason to table, would not collude again.”
“I got some news for you Don—just because you didn’t get your secret Russian intel doesn’t mean you’re the good guy here,” Colbert said.
Referencing Trump Jr.’s assurance that “in retrospect” he would probably do things different, Colbert got one last dig in: “He’s right—hindsight is 20/20,” Colbert said. “And I think a lot of voters will be using hindsight in 2020.”
