The battle between the House and Senate Republicans deepened on Tuesday when 38 House Republicans sent a letter to Senate Leader John Thune (R-SD) demanding he pass President Donald Trump's "big, beautiful [budget] bill."
Several GOP Senators have concerns with the specifics of the bill. Some don't like the significant cuts to Medicaid, while others oppose blocking states from regulating artificial intelligence.
Politico reported that House Republicans are demanding to keep "budget gimmicks" out of the Senate's rewrite of the legislation.
"Pass reconciliation legislation that upholds the fiscal discipline of the House's framework," the letter demands. "The final bill must deliver structural reforms that strengthen long-term growth and produce long-term savings."
However, the letter also ordered Senate colleagues, "that any additional tax cuts" in the party’s megabill "must be matched dollar-for-dollar by real, enforceable spending reductions." The tax cuts in the bill are not matched "dollar-for-dollar" by spending reductions. According to the Congressional Budget Office, the bill would add $2.4 trillion to the deficit.
The fact is what prompted tech billionaire Elon Musk to call on lawmakers to oppose the budget entirely.
"Senate Republicans are mulling significant changes to the House-passed border, energy and tax package, central to enacting President Donald Trump’s vast legislative agenda, that would inevitably increase the measure’s deficit impact," Politico said.
Signers of the bill include some of the most far-right officials in Congress like Reps. Scott Perry (R-PA), Lauren Boebert (R-CO), Andrew Clyde (R-GA), Ryan Zinke (R-MT) and others.
