Prosecutors on Friday rejected Hunter Biden's claims that his criminal case should be dismissed because it had been "infected" by the arrest of a key witness in a separate investigation into him by House Republicans.
Biden had claimed that Alexander Smirnov's claims that Biden and his father had taken bribes from individuals in Ukraine had caused a knock-on effect on the separate federal charges involving tax evasion and gun violations.
Smirnov had been a key witness in the GOP's investigation into business dealings involving Biden and his father, then Vice President Joe Biden. He has since been arrested and charged with lying to the FBI.
But, in a response to Biden's filing, prosecutors on Friday, said there was no connection.
New York Times reporter Ken Vogel posted the court filing online.
Smirnov "reportedly admitted to prosecutors that the story had been drawn up with the help of top Russian intelligence officials and the whole thing was a bed of lies," said The New Republic in a report.
But prosecutors claim that Smirnov's information has nothing to do with allegations of unpaid taxes and lying on a form when buying a gun that the younger Biden is facing criminal charges for.

Prosecutors claimed, "The defendant fails to establish the first element of his selective prosecution claim because he did not identify a similarly situated person who was not prosecuted."
The prosecutors also complained Hunter Biden didn't give examples of animus by the prosecutors that would fall under vindictive prosecution.
The younger Biden is facing nine felony and misdemeanor tax offenses and three felony gun charges.
