An Idaho restaurant owner wore brown face paint for his latest ad for a Mexican-style menu at PizzalChik, his Boise eatery.
According to the Idaho Statesman, the social media video has been taken down and owner Brad Breakell has apologized, but it certainly isn’t the first time he’s been accused of racism.
Just last year, Breakell also painted his face black.
In that case, PizzalChik’s Facebook, Yelp and Google Reviews blew up up with accusations of racism. Breakell similarly apologized and removed his video. But the owner has no idea why the videos are suddenly becoming controversial.
He told The Statesman the complaints began to roll in Saturday night. On Sunday, PizzalChik’s Facebook was flooded with angry posts. On Monday, dozens of ratings of the establishment pulled down the company's rating on Facebook and Yelp so they only had one star. All of them referenced his Facebook videos.
The video has also been reposted by Boiseans like Magy Chavez, who are demanding accountability.
“I’m not trying to make him lose business, I just want (other people) to be able to make informed decisions about where they’re spending their money,” Chavez said.
Chavez’s posted the video and has been viewed nearly 7,000 times.
As “Billy Burrito,” Breakell wore a sombrero and poncho. He puts on sunglasses and drew on eyebrows and a mustache. In the video he speaks in an exaggerated Spanish accent and talks about the new menu. He then gives a "shoutout to Magy" from "Lenny the landscaper."
“If you look at my body of videos, there’s nothing offensive,” Breakell said Monday. “If I was going to make fun of Mexicans, would I call myself Billy Burrito? Billy’s not a Mexican name.”
