Tea Party Maine Gov. Paul LePage has repeatedly gotten himself in trouble for his inflammatory, racist remarks -- and people of color living in the state are fed up with him.
The Portland Press-Herald has interviewed people of color who live in Maine and they are not happy with LePage's antics, in particular his assertion that the vast majority of heroin dealers in the state are black or Hispanic.
"I feel as if I need to wear a T-shirt that says I’m not a drug dealer," black resident Forrest Butler told the publication. "I’m a business owner, a homeowner, I have two children who are biracial. I moved to your state because it’s gorgeous and great for families."
Black Maine resident Shay Stewart-Bouley, meanwhile, said that LePage routinely "dehumanizes people of color" and shows no understanding of how to improve race relations.
"This is a man who’s deeply uncomfortable talking about race," she said.
Yvette and Robert McDonnell, an interracial Maine couple, recently posted a video on YouTube that took LePage to task for his assertion that "the enemy right now, the overwhelming majority of people coming in, are people of color or people of Hispanic origin."
"He's giving consent to people to target people of color," said Robert McDonnell.
"He's vilifying us," added Yvette McDonnell. "We are not the enemy."
