Immigrants protest House hearing with 'undocumented and unafraid' chant

A House judiciary hearing into immigration reform was briefly interrupted when a group of young immigrants began chanting, "Undocumented and unafraid" at a California lawmaker who opposed the DREAM Act.

Think Progress reported on Tuesday that the group of teenagers directed its chant at Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA), one of the 160 GOP members who voted against the act in 2010, as soon as he was offered the chance to speak.

A spokesperson for United We Dream, an immigrant advocacy group, told The Raw Story that the protesters were members of that organization. They were quickly ejected from the hearing and left without incident.

The DREAM Act, which stalled in the U.S. Senate in December 2010, would have created a set of guidelines for undocumented immigrants between the ages of 12 and 35 to obtain U.S. citizenship. In response to GOP obstinacy on the subject, President Barack Obama signed an executive order last year enacting a similar program, the Deferred Actions for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) initiative.

Update: An earlier version of this story had mistaken listed all of the demonstrators as members of United We Dream's Queer Undocumented Immigrant Project. However, a spokesperson clarified that each of the demonstrators identified as a queer immigrant or an ally.
