U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement blamed Rep. Salud Carbajal (D-CA) on Sunday for encouraging a "violent mob" to attack immigration agents.
"Carbajal was part of a violent mob of protestors attempting to obstruct federal law enforcement as they executed a criminal search warrant at a marijuana facility," ICE posted on its official account on X. "He cites 'peaceful' protestors, when in fact these rioters were launching rocks at officers, injuring at least one ICE employee who was left bloody."
The accusation came a couple of days after Carbajal attended the immigration raid at Carpinteria Glass House cannabis greenhouse in Santa Barbara County, California. Carbajal said in a video after the event that more than 50 ICE agents participated in the raids, and protesters were already on-site when he arrived.
In a statement posted on X following the raid, Carbajal said he was "denied entry" to the marijuana facility where the raid was taking place. He also called the operation "completely unacceptable."
"There has been a troubling lack of transparency from ICE since the Trump administration started, and I won't stop asking questions on behalf of my constituents," Carbajal's statement reads in part.
Immigration enforcement is one of the most controversial pillars of the second Trump administration. Trump campaigned on a promise to deport criminal immigrants, and border czar Tom Homan has set a daily quota of 3,000 arrests to achieve that goal. However, ICE operations have raised concerns about the treatment of immigrants.
Several Democratic lawmakers have tried to conduct oversight by accessing ICE detention facilities, but have been turned away. Some lawmakers, such as Rep. LaMonica McIver (D-NJ), have been arrested and charged with impeding law enforcement.
