In tribute video to Sen. Ted Kennedy, Dems blast Romney

In a tribute video to the late Sen. Edward Kennedy, Democrats at the party's presidential nominating convention spotlighted the progressive icon's support for President Obama while also using old footage from Kennedy's Senate race against Mitt Romney to bash the newly-minted GOP presidential nominee.

The video opens with a nostalgic biography of Kennedy's Senate tenure, highlighting the key issues he promoted including, most prominently given the signature achievement of Obama's first term, health care reform. Yet immediately after reestablishing Kennedy's mythic status in the party—an image bolstered by video of former President Bill Clinton eulogizing him as one of the most effective Senators ever—the tribute goes on to use Kennedy's 1994 Senate race against Mitt Romney as a bludgeon.

With footage from a debate during that 1994 election, Kennedy is shown demolishing Romney's credibility on a number of fronts. On abortion, Kennedy labels Romney as being not pro-choice but "multiple choice," mocking Romney's shift on the issue. Kennedy hammered Romney during that contest for the Republican's perceived image as a flip-flopper, an image Romney has still not completely shaken off.

"Now he looks like he's for minimum wage, now he looks like he's for education reform," Kennedy is shown saying in the video. "If we give him two more weeks he may even vote for me because those are the things I'm for."

Kennedy famously endorsed Obama in the heated 2o08 primaries against Hilary Clinton. Then, just a few months after announcing he had a malignant brain tumor, Kennedy delivered one of the prime time speeches at that year's Democratic convention during which he said Obama would carry on the fight for the causes he'd championed in a half century in the Senate.
