Inquiry into the death of Eric Garner will be reopened to shed transparency on a case that has been 'shrouded in secrecy': report

The death of Eric Garner at the hands of New York City police officers in 2014 will return to public view in what may be the final milestone of the case, The New York Times reports.

A judicial inquiry into Garner's death will begin Monday which will hear public testimony from dozens of witnesses, including several officers involved in the case. As the Times points out, new charges or settlements won't be brought -- the officer who killed Garner while putting him in a chokehold has been fired with no criminal charges, and Garner's family has already reached a settlement with the city.

The hearing, according to the Times, is designed to bring greater transparency to a case that has been shrouded in secrecy.

"I've been waiting seven years, I need answers for this," Garner's mother Gwen Carr said in an interview. "What really happened on that day?"

"There's no justice for Eric because he's dead. For me, there only could be closure," she added.
