Internet mocks 'triggered snowflake' sci-fi fans throwing a tantrum over new 'lady Doctor Who'

Over the weekend, the BBC announced that the new 13th Doctor in the "Doctor Who" series will be a woman. Actress Jodie Whittaker was revealed as the new Time Lord via a social media video.

"I always knew I wanted the Thirteenth Doctor to be a woman and we're thrilled to have secured our number one choice," said Chris Chibnall, the show's new showrunner.

A female Doctor is not the first time a woman has been a Time Lord, however, both Riversong and "The Master" have been played by women.

But when it came to the fan response, many were overcome with sexism and denounced it with misogyny.

"Liberal snowflakes won again," complained a user named "New Kid."

"Another show ruined by political correctness, what next a female Tarzan?" asked Johnnyk from Swindon in the U.K.

"I'm now looking forward to a male Wonder Woman, a male Miss Marple, a male Laura Croft, an all-male Sex in the City reboot, a male Xena, because obviously it's 'important' to 'challenge gender stereotypes,'" posted Philmo Phlegm of Cornwall.

Their comments didn't go over very well as other male and female fans united around the new "lady Doctor."

Riversong herself, actress Alex Kingston described Whittaker as a "really great actress." She gleefully exclaimed, "Oh! I'm so excited!"

And perhaps the best of them all:

"It feels completely overwhelming, as a feminist, as a woman, as an actor, as a human," Whittaker said of the new role.
