‘Is this Balenciaga?’: Katy Perry jokes at 2017 VMAs that her fall look is ‘Handmaid’s Tale’ chic

During Sunday night's MTV Video Music Awards, singer Katy Perry joked that she's basing her next fashion look on the red robes and white bonnets of the Hulu TV series "The Handmaid's Tale," based on the dystopian novel by Canadian author Margaret Atwood.

"What are the kids wearing these days?" she said as she flicked through a rack of outfits on stage.

"Oh, my god, this one is so beautiful," Perry said, holding up the red and white Handmaid uniform. "Is this Balenciaga? Very retro pilgrim, but it's very cool."

She went on to read from a prop newspaper that said, "The world is on fire."

"How the f*ck are you coping right now?" she asked the audience before playing with a fidget spinner.
