A Democratic Senator called out the GOP's "aversion to gun control" on Sunday following the deadly shooting at Brown University.
On Saturday, a gunman killed two students and critically wounded nine others at Brown University. Police have arrested an individual they've identified as a person of interest.
A vigil is scheduled on Sunday night for the slain students.
Sen. Jack Reed (D-RI) discussed the shooting during an interview on MS NOW's weekend show, "White House: Weekend."
"We're going to haveto roll up oursleeves and get back in thefight, literally," Reed said about Democrats working with Republicans on gun control measures. "Are theresympathetic elements? I thinkthere are. But they have toovercome a generalaversion in their party to anytype of gun control."
Reed laid part of the blame for the lack of support for gun control policies at the feet of the gun lobby, which he described as "well-financed and entrenched."
"There arecultural issues here," he added. "We all remember the westernmovies where everybody had agun. And there aremany parts of the United States, including even parts of New England, where, having a weapon is somethingthat they feel is a right thatthey must have, and theyvigorously defend it."
"So we'retrying toconvince people that for theirgood, for their safety, thesafety of their children, without restricting access tofirearms, for hunting and fortarget shooting and everythingthat is like sport ... butwe are going to make surepeople are safer," Reed added. "It's along struggle."
