President Donald Trump is going to bend and twist the rule of law even further than he already has, former FBI Director James Comey warned in an MS NOW interview with Nicolle Wallace on "Deadline: White House" — and the American people need to be ready.
Comey was previously indicted on politically motivated charges of lying to Congress, based on Senate testimony where he appeared to be telling the truth. After those charges were thrown out because Trump's prosecutor was improperly appointed, he was hit with new charges accusing him of threatening violence against the president, based on a social media post of seashells.
"There doesn't appear to beanybody left who is willing tostand for institutionalimperatives, norms, things likethe rule of law in the face ofa desire by the president," said Wallace. "There were those people in thefirst term. Trump spotted itand wanted to make sure itdidn't happen again. Apparently,it happened a little bit, atleast with Pam Bondi. So she'sgone. What it tells me is thathe has found the crew that hewas looking for. What does that mean for thecountry?"
"It's bad," said Comey. "You never wanttime to fly, but it means it'sgoing to be a very difficulttwo years. And whatever it is,two and a half years. Thankgoodness for the elections thisfall. Thank goodness for thejudiciary. But we're in for arough ride, which reallyshouldn't shock anyone who knewwhat Donald Trump was, who knewabout January 6th, about the2020 election lies. All of thiswas in some ways predictable. And now we're going to have tolive with it. I'm going to haveto live with it."
"When he calls you a dirty cop, what is he talking aboutand how does that make you feel?" Wallace continued.
"I — honestly, it's crazy that I'm in a place where I'm 65years old, and I actually findit a little bit humorous tohave this obsession by this 80-year-old man with me, I don'tknow," said Comey. "And I am an honest person.I am a person who was raised tostand up and speak out. I can'tdo any other."
