Jane Lynch and Jordan Peele sing 'Epic Church and State Breakup' in bizarre video

In a bizarre advocacy video published Thursday by Americans United for the Separation of Church and State (AU), comedians Jordan Peele and Jane Lynch sing a 70's style romance ballad about an "epic church and state breakup," in what the group's director called a "clever, amusing way" to reach people.

"You always take control; hate when you play that role," Peele croons, playing the role of State. "I gotta be strong, 'cause baby we don't belong, together."

"I wish I knew what makes me do the things I do," Lynch replies, playing the role of Church. "See, there is good in me, but bad is all you see. Could have been wrong, but baby we don't belong, together."

Rev. Barry Lynn, executive director of AU, told Raw Story he felt the video was a "clever, amusing way" to reach people and gather signatures for a petition calling on public officials to enact "laws based on justice, fairness and equality – not dogma."

"We're just delighted these folks put so much time and interest in this," Lynn said. "The purpose of it is, among other things, to get people to sign a petition that demonstrates the depth of support for church-state separation around the country. We hope it is shared widely."

"The birds [in the video] were particularly helpful, landing in the right place even though they were not scripted to do that," he added. "You could say that [it was divine intervention], or someone else might say it's a random event, and then both people could be full-class citizens of America for saying it."

"That's really the bottom line for church-state separation," Lynn concluded. "Nobody ought to feel like they're excluded because of their religion or a non-religious path that they follow. We're all in this together and the best way to solve [our problems] is to respect the constitutional principle."
