Former Washington Gov. Jay Inslee on Wednesday said that Democrats in Washington D.C. appear to be more ready to fight after President Donald Trump threw the government into chaos this week with an executive order that resulted in shutting down Medicaid portals.
Appearing on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," Inslee argued that Trump truly stepped in it when he delivered a sweeping executive order that froze all government loans and grants.
In addition to creating major blowback when crucial services such as Medicaid and Head Start seemed to be at risk, Trump's actions also seemed to shake Democrats out of the passivity that had plagued the party since Trump won the 2024 election.

"Now is the time to get up there on our hind legs and confront this guy every single place we can," he said. "And frankly, my party has been just a little bit too passive and quiet in this regard. I'm sensing we've woken up in the last 24 hours. You hear the voices of Sen. Patty Murray, who's fighting this. You're seeing our attorney general, that's the first in the nation to get an injunction against this effort to take away birthright citizenship, which is clearly unconstitutional. I think you're seeing an awakening of a sleeping giant here, and we've got to keep that giant active."
Then Rev. Al Sharpton shared Inslee's sentiment and said Democrats needed to give up delusions of working constructively with Trump.
"I mean, does somebody have to slap you in the face before you realize that they are really wanting to fight?" he asked. "You fight back and I think that we've got to wake up our base... in order to give them something to rally around."
