Jersey Shore man sentenced to prison for shoving police officer during Jan. 6 riot

A Toms River man who admitted to pushing a police officer outside the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021 will spend the next 18 months in prison, well below what attorneys suggested he serve behind bars. Salvatore Vassallo, 60, pleaded guilty in May to assaulting, resisting or impeding a police officer, in federal court in Washington, D.C. Federal sentencing guidelines for his case call for 24 to 30 months, and a federal prosecutor argued he get 27 months. His own lawyer suggested 24 months behind bars.
