Officials are sending suggestions to Biden for the Supreme Court -- and a congressman has a suggestion
No one has died, but Democratic officials are already sending ideas to President Joe Biden for who they'd like to replace any outgoing justices on the Supreme Court.
According to the New York Times, one recommendation, in particular, has come from Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-SC), who wants to see District Court Judge J. Michelle Childs make the list of candidates. She's a South Carolina judge but she was also made the chair of the American Bar Association's Judicial Division in 2020, reported Carolina Panorama last August. She would be the first Black female Justice appointed to the High Court.
The report explained that there are some Democrats hopeful that Justice Stephen Breyer, who is 82, will retire while Biden holds the Office of the President.
"Some Democrats like Mr. Clyburn, who have nervously watched Republicans try to repackage themselves as a working-class party, believe that Mr. Biden could send a message about his determination to keep Democrats true to their blue-collar roots by choosing a candidate like Ms. Childs, who attended public universities," instead of the ivy leagues, said the Times.
"When people talk to diversity they are always looking at race and ethnicity — I look beyond that to diversity of experience," said the Congressman.
Biden made a campaign promise ahead of the South Carolina primary that he would be the one to appoint the first Black woman to the Supreme Court. Biden was resistant at the time, fearful that it would be seen as pandering, the report said. But Clyburn encouraged him to make the pledge public.
"It's going to have to be someone who has unquestioned credentials, so it doesn't look like it's an unqualified person," a senior Biden official told the Times.
