John Lewis will not be going to Trump's second State of the Union: 'He needs to be a little more human'

On Friday, Rep. John Lewis (D-GA) announced he doesn't plan on attending President Donald Trump's second State of the Union address.

"I cannot in all the conscience be in a room with what he has said about so many Americans," Lewis told MSNBC's Katy Tur in the wake of Trump's "sh*thole" comment. "I just cannot do it. I wouldn't be honest with myself."

When Tur asked what Lewis' friend and fellow civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. would say to Trump, he said the icon would implore the president to "wake up."

"You need to do what is right, you need to do what is fair," the Georgia congressman said, imagining MLK's dialogue with Trump. "You need to be a little more human. And respect the worth of every human being and stop putting people down because of their race, their color or their nationality."

Many of Lewis’ fellow Democratic lawmakers intend to protest the State of the Union by wearing black to the event a la the Golden Globes.

As Kristen Clarke of the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law noted, this week marks a year since then-president-elect Trump began a feud with the civil rights icon over claims Lewis had been ignoring urban crime. The attacks took place near MLK Day, and after the initial spat, Trump cancelled an MLK day tour of a civil rights museum that honored Lewis.
