Jon Stewart on Rolling Stone's failed UVA rape report: You found the one story that 'set the cause back'

Daily Show host Jon Stewart lit into Rolling Stone magazine on Wednesday for not only botching its report on campus rape at the University of Virginia, but failing to punish any staff members involved with the story.

"This UVA story was monumental, f*cked-up territory. Campus rape happens with shocking frequency, a very real and under-reported problem that many college and university administrations have met with a lack of concern and stonewalling. Victims need help and support," he said. "Yet somehow, in a sea of verifiable assaults, you managed to 'Where's Waldo' the only rape story that not only would fail to get your point across, but set the cause back. Someone's gotta go."

The magazine retracted the story after it was blasted in an independent review by the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, which accused RS of not holding to "basic, even routine journalistic practices."

Publisher Jann Wenner refused to fire the article's author, Sabrina Rubin Erdely, or any editor connected to the piece, and described Erdely's source, a rape victim identified as "Jackie," as a "really expert fabulist storyteller." Stewart mocked Wenner on Wednesday for saying that the Columbia report was sufficient punishment for the magazine.

"What the f*ck? That's not how this works," Stewart said. "If nobody else has the guts to do it, I'll fire them. I'm making a citizen's firing. Pack up your desks and give me the number of security there. How can there be no consequences for an error of this magnitude?"
