Journalism world stunned by death of New York Times media columnist David Carr

The journalism world reeled on Thursday night following the death of New York Times media columnist David Carr. He was 58.

The newspaper confirmed Carr's death with a short obituary following statements from individual staffers online.

"It wasn't my place to make an announcement," staff artist Sarah Booth said on Twitter. "Tonight David Carr collapsed and we were just told by the photo desk that he did not make it."

The Times' social media editor, Michael Roston, posted a statement from executive editor Dean Baquet to the staff. Roston is a former Washington correspondent for Raw Story.

"He was the finest media reporter of his generation," Baquet wrote. "A remarkable and funny man who was one of the leaders of our newsroom. He was our biggest champion, and his unending passion for journalism and for truth will be missed by our family at the Times."

Carr died just hours after interviewing fellow journalist Glenn Greenwald, filmmaker Laura Poitras and former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden.
