U.S. District Court Judge Tanya Chutkan denied part of former President Donald Trump's motion asking for special counsel Jack Smith to be held in contempt of court. But she also said Smith must not provide any additional filings to the court without notice.
In a six-page order released on Thursday, Chutkan responded to Trump's request to forbid Smith from making any additional filings in the former president's election subversion case while a higher court decided if he had immunity from prosecution.
Trump asked for Smith to be held in contempt for filings he did make while the immunity claim was being considered, and for those filings to be withdrawn.
"The Stay Order did not clearly and unambiguously prohibit the Government actions to which Defendant objects," Chutkan said of an earlier order. "On its own terms, then, the Stay Order's key operative sentence did not clearly bar the Government from voluntary rather than obligatory compliance with the Pretrial Order's now-stayed deadlines."

The judge said Smith's filings had been "mostly compatible" with the earlier stay order.
Chutkan, however, elected to adopt Trump's request to forbid Smith from further filings until the appeal was decided. She said that Smith could ask permission to file additional documents if necessary.
All of Trump's other requests were denied.
