Jury hears Zimmerman claim Trayvon said 'you got me' after being shot in lung

In an audio statement played in Florida court on Monday, jurors heard former neighborhood watchmen George Zimmerman tell police that slain teen Trayvon Martin said "you got me" after a bullet pierced his lung and heart.

Sanford Police Officer Doris Singleton testified that Zimmerman had provided her with the audio statement after he shot and killed Martin in February 2012.

"These guys always get away," Zimmerman explains on the tape. "He was walking leisurely and looking at the houses. So, I just pulled my car to the side and called a [police] non-emergency line."

Zimmerman claims that Martin then "goes back into the darkness" between two houses before "he comes back out and circles my car."

The former neighborhood watchmen says that he got out of his car a few minutes later to look at a street sign.

"I'm trying to find out where he went," Zimmerman recalls telling the police dispatcher. "And he said, 'We don't need you to do that.' And I said, 'Okay.'"

"So I was walking back through to where my car was and he jumped out from the bushes, and he said, 'What the fuck's your problem, homie.' And I got my cell phone out to call 911 this time, and I say, 'Hey, man, I don't have a problem.' And he goes, 'Now, you have a problem.' And he punched me in the nose.'"

Zimmerman tells Singleton that he fell down and Martin "just started punching me in the face and I started screaming for help. I couldn't see, I couldn't breath."

Martin then starting hitting Zimmerman's head into the sidewalk, he says. "He puts his hand on my nose and my mouth and he says, 'You're going to die tonight.'"

"And when he said, 'You're going to die tonight,' I felt his hand go down by my side and I thought he was going for my firearm. So I grabbed it immediately and as he banged my head again, I just pulled out my firearm and shot him."

The statement continues: "He's mounted on top of me and I just shot him and then he falls off and he's like, 'All right, you got me, you got it.'"

Zimmerman insists that he had to get on top of Martin and hold his hands "because he was still talking."

An autopsy report released last year revealed that Martin had been shot a half inch below his nipple. The bullet went through a lung and lodged in his heart.

Forensic pathologist Dr. William L. Manion told the Orlando Sentinel that Martin would have been conscious for 20 to 30 seconds after being shot.
