This Kansas Democrat could become the first Native American woman ever in Congress if she knocks off Republican in blue district

Sharice Davids would become the first Native American woman to ever serve in Congress if she can knock off a Republican in a suburban district that Hillary Clinton carried in the 2016 presidential election.

Davids is running in the 3rd District, in the suburbs of Kansas City. Hillary Clinton won the blue suburban district in Johnson County handily in 2016, when Republican U.S. Rep. Kevin Yoder kept his seat.

The Trump-loving Yoder has vowed to stand by Trump no matter what.

Davids won the nomination in a crowded six-way field, besting Brent Welder, a Democratic Socialist who just moved into the district. The white male Welder had received loud support from media outlets like The Young Turks and U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, who flew to Kansas to campaign with him. Fellow Socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez joined Sanders on the trip.

On the other side, Emily's List had stepped in to support Davids against against Sanders and Welder..

Her campaign ads showed Davids working out and boxing, emphasizing her toughness.

"Republicans in congress don't give a damn," she says in the ad. "About anyone like me, or anyone that doesn't think like them. Enough."

Davids is not only Native American, but a lesbian and the daughter of a single mother who is a U.S. Army veteran.
