Karl Rove thinks Trump's 'big lie' could actually hurt the GOP in 2024
Former President Donald Trump's "big lie" could become a "big problem" for the Republican Party, far-right Republican consultant Karl Rove wrote Thursday.
Writing for the Wall Street Journal, Rove explained that the "big lie" has led Trump to go after some of the Republicans who haven't supported him in the past. Thus far, he's endorsed 85 Republican candidates, which Rove said is more than probably any other president. Rove thinks it's about keeping his hand in for 2024. For the most part, however, it's about making his win-loss record look better after some failures.
"Settling scores is a high priority for the former president," Rove explained. "Ohio Rep. Anthony Gonzalez supported Mr. Trump’s impeachment following the Jan. 6 assault on the Capitol. Mr. Trump endorsed his primary opponent, a Trump White House staffer named Max Miller, and Mr. Gonzalez subsequently announced he wouldn’t run in 2022. The Ohio Legislature then cut up the seat in redistricting, putting Mr. Miller in a Democratic-leaning district. Mr. Trump is backing primary opponents to other Republican House members who supported his impeachment, but that hasn’t led to any other withdrawals so far."
An endorsement of Trump doesn't necessarily equal a win, he noted. There were two examples earlier in 2021 that proved his name wasn't as powerful as campaign cash, rallies and other traditional tools.

All of Trump's candidates "face a critical choice: Should they focus on Mr. Trump’s claims that the 2020 election was stolen to protect their endorsement? Or should they make their race about providing a check on President Biden and risk incurring Mr. Trump’s wrath?" asked Rove.
Trump may try to put his name on candidates the way he did with his buildings, steaks, vodka, university and airline, most of which are now defunct. The GOP could go the way of those Trump products if it isn't careful.
"If the GOP can’t learn to shake the Trump obsession with alleged election fraud, the former president could even hand Democrats the White House—again," he closed.
