Add former Naval War College professor Tom Nichols to those who are wondering today why the Republican Party chose freshman Sen. Katie Britt (R-AL) to give the response to President Joe Biden's State of the Union address.
Appearing on CNN with host Jim Acosta, Nichols — now a columnist for The Atlantic — came down on the side of those who were baffled by Britt's over-emoting and dramatic speech from her barren-appearing kitchen that he concluded came across as "creepy."
"Let's talk about the Republican response. Senator Katie Britt of Alabama, she has been considered kind of a rising star in the GOP right now," host Acosta prompted his guest. "She gave the response to the State of the Union.
After sharing a clip, Acosta asked, "Tom, what did you make of that? And also the optics of where she was sitting in delivering that response. I mean, a lot of folks took note of that as well."

"Well, in the words, if I may paraphrase, of President George W. Bush, that was some weird stuff, man," he joked.
"You know, the whole kitchen setting and that kind of the very labored and breathy and wavering voice delivery, I mean, I've never seen that. I have to be honest here and say that was my introduction is Senator Britt. I have never heard her speak."
"I actually thought that the Republicans were going to put somebody out young, vital, trying to draw a parallel with Joe Biden and that was kind of unnerving in a way," he continued. "That whole business, I think the kitchen locale, you know, I mean it was a little too on the nose for a party that's had problems with women and reproductive rights and women's rights."
"The whole thing was a little creepy," he added.
